Food Introduction Basics: How to Go About Weaning Kittens

Transitions are never an easy thing in life—especially when food is the focus of the transition. When young pets (in this case, kittens, specifically) are about to be introduced to solid pet food, certain things should be done.

Today, we at Pet Centre of Sparta wanted to lend a few tips to any cat owner (past, present, or future) that is aiming to get through weaning kittens from milk to solid pet food! Let’s get started.

Consult Your Vet

As always, whenever it comes to anything that concerns your pet, it is best to consult the animal healthcare practitioner that you trust. They will be able to give you an idea of the time table that it would take for your pet to become used to the idea of solid food.

Pet food can come as quite a surprise for systems that are used to primarily liquid form of sustenance. A lot of the time, kittens tend to reject solid food and their health ends up suffering because of it. At this point in time—or preferably before the time comes—it would be wise to consult with your pet’s doctor to make sure that you are going to approach the whole thing as best as possible.

Observe Your Cat

If your kitten is around 3 to 4 weeks old, they should be ready to be introduced to solid food. If the kitten is still with the mother, you can check for signs that they are ready by seeing if they try to eat what the mother is eating.

If the kitten has been orphaned prior to the 3rd or 4th week, there is a big chance that the kitten will be more inclined to start solid food a lot earlier.  If you spot the signs that they are ready to be introduced to solid food, have your chosen kitten food ready. Always trust your instincts when it comes to your pet. If you think they are ready, test it out. If they show that they aren’t, do not force the issue. Your pet needs you to be attentive—especially in this point in time.

Be Patient

The weaning process should roughly take around 3-4 weeks. Depending on the needs of your kitten, it may actually take even longer. Start off with introducing a bit of wet food or some kibble that’s been moistened with a bit of water.

Kittens need to eat but they also need to up the strength of their teeth. So it would do no good to keep feeding them something that is overly soft. Be prepared for your kitten to reject the food every now and then. This is where your patience will be sorely needed. Kittens need owners that are patient with them so that they’ll have a good environment to explore and learn.

It is also important to note that since they are still learning to eat, they may be quite messy so prep yourself for that as well.

Keep Them Warm

Weaning kittens need to be kept warm—more than usual. The transition is going to mess up their body’s normal systems since its being introduced to something new while simultaneously limiting what they’re used to. Make sure that they have a good place to bundle up. Add a few extra blankets around where they sleep but make sure that they have sufficient room to breathe.

If your kitten is presently in the process of weaning, you can expect them to gravitate towards warm things a lot more. This can mean that your kitten will want to snuggle with you more so take full advantage of this time and keep your pet warm!

So there you have it! We at Pet Centre of Sparta hope that the information we’ve shared helps with the weaning of the kittens in your life! What are your thoughts about this? What steps have you taken to wean your kitties?

Bully Sticks for Dogs: Why Should Pet Treats Be Part of Your Pup’s Life?

In a pet’s life food plays a really big part. It isn’t just the food that is given on a rather frequent basis. Even the “snacks” or treats that we give them play a rather large part into it. This is something that a lot of pet owners tend to have debates about.

For today’s discussion, we wanted to discuss the importance of bully stick doggie treats and why they must certainly play a role in your dog’s life. We’re not just talking about treats as they are used to train new pups. Treats go beyond that. If used properly, treats can be utilized for a great many positive things. Our favorites just happen to be Pawstruck – bully sticks.

Let us elaborate.

Treats Enforce Discipline—For Both Parties

When we say “both parties” we are, of course, referring to both the pet and their owner. You see, once a pet gets a taste or a whiff of the scent of the treat, the dog (regardless of age) will bound up quite excitedly just to obtain the treat. If the dog is able, they will indeed try to pounce on their owner.

treats - Bully Sticks for Dogs: Why Should Pet Treats Be Part of Your Pup’s Life?

If the owner gives the treat in that state, they are enforcing the idea that it is okay to be hyper and to even leap upon their owners. If the treat is withheld until the pet is in a much calmer state, the owner is teaching their pet that calm must supersede.

In this exchange, there must be the balance between the owner and the pet in order to make use of treats effectively. Treats can be a good tool for both the pet and owner to learn how to be on their best behavior and pick up healthier habits.

Treats Can Boost Health

When treats are used properly, they can actually be sued to boost the health of a pet. There are a lot of different treats which have different ingredients that are known to help dogs with their bodily complaints.

It is also true that there are certain treats with ingredients that can end up being harmful to a pet. The greatest distinction would have to be on the part of the pet owner. It must be their role to distinguish which ones are best to suit the health of the animal in their care.

The treat that must be given should suit the age, health condition, and the breed of the animal. When done right, treats can help to keep teeth healthy, boost energies, and to expel any toxins from the animal’s body.

Treats Strengthen Bonds

There is no secret about the fact that pet dogs love treats. What pet trainers will tell you is that treats aren’t just used to enforce good behavior. They are made to establish a bond that is stronger than any other.

The one who gives the treats is the one that the dog will be loyal to the most—this is a fact that a lot of people tend to ignore. It is not affection or discipline which will win you the love of a pet. It is the person who gives the treats. There is a reason why strangers train dogs they only give treats after meeting specific tasks but never more.

This is to make sure that the animal is not confused as to whom their allegiance must be.

So there you have it! We at Pet Centre of Sparta would love to hear your thoughts regarding treats and the role they have to play in the lives of dogs. What are you thoughts about it? Do you give your pets treats? What role to treats play?

Before You Feed Them Veggies: 3 Things You Need to Know About Cat Diets

One trend that we’ve been seeing a lot would have to be this belief that cats can survive primarily on vegan or completely vegetarian meals. This is something that we believe needs a spotlight upon. We believe that cats can adjust to a variety of flavors that their owners tend to introduce them to.

While that may not be necessarily a bad thing, a lot of owners tend to forget the diets that cat need to maintain in order to remain truly healthy. If you are one of the cat owners that is thinking of switching your cat’s diet to a predominantly vegetables, you may want to read what we have to say about this.

Here are a few important things you need to know about cat’s diets in general:

They Are Not Omnivores

This is something that can be easy to forget as we tend to see vagrant cats being able to eat pretty much anything. That odd diet of theirs is borne out of desperation rather than a conscious decision. Even if you do see them eat what seems to be comprised of plastic or something that been lying there for days, you will most likely see them trying to find meat and protein.

People tend to think that cats are omnivores because they compare their diets to dogs that are able to eat pretty much anything. There are also dogs that have predominantly veggie based diets. This should not give you the idea that cats can survive on the same thing. Their biology is completely different from those of dogs.

Certain Veggies are Toxic to Them

Certain veggies are actually toxic to cats. Yup, you heard that right. Some vegetables which we (and often other animals) consume on a regular basis can actually and quite literally cause the death of a pet cat.

We feel that much emphasis is needed as there have been countless kitties which have unintentionally been poisoned by their owners. Before you consider giving your pet cat any sort of veggies, we highly suggest that you consult a vet or do a massive amount of research regarding what is safe for them to eat.

Think of it this way, just because we see goats, sheep, and cows eat grass doesn’t mean that we should be doing it, too. We hope that you do try to actively find out what sort of vegetation is actually bad or toxic for your cats before it is too late.

Wild Cats Do Not Eat Vegetation of Any Kind

Our adorable housecats are descendants of bigger and wilder cats that live out in the wild. While a lot of them are endangered, this is due to human involvement and not anything to do with their natural diets. Wild cats are meat eaters.

Wild cats have never been observed imbibing any wild vegetation of any kind. Even if they are found to thrive in different areas which have massive amounts of fruits and vegetables, they do not eat them at all. This is because their digestive system and even their skulls have evolved specifically to better process meat and protein.

So there you have it! We here at Pet Centre of Sparta hope that today’s discussion give you a chance to pause and think about introducing veggies of any sort to your pet cat. What are your thoughts about this? Would you consider giving your pet cat some veggies?

Stepping Up: Two Most Prevalent Problems with Pet Health

Pets don’t usually get much choice regarding their way of life and what they repeatedly put into their bodies. That responsibility lies with their owners; this is why it is so disheartening to hear of the two most prevalent problems in pet health are mostly owner-related.

Today, we wanted to talk about—you guessed it—the two biggest pet health problems that have been striking pets all over the world. It’s really odd how there could be so many people who have pets which end up having the same problems. The only common factor would be their owners. It is a rather difficult trend and we want it to stop and we believe that sharing information about it is the way to go.

Here are the two most prevalent pet health problems to date:

Obesity

There has been a startling trend of household pets that have been several kilograms over the healthy prescribed weight limit. There have been entire TV shows that centered on obese animals. What every episode seems to have in common is the fact that the owners of the pets seemingly are unaware of the right amount of food that is needed by their charges.

What happens is that a lot of pet owners give 2-4 times the food amount that is needed for them to be sufficiently fed. The end result is that the pets end up obscenely obese.

Malnutrition

Many people think that just because a pet is rather chunky (read that as obese) that they are getting all the nutrition that they need. The truth of the matter is that alongside obesity is pet malnutrition. There are a lot of house pets which are given mostly fatty and unhealthy food.

So while they bulk up, their bodies do not actually get the nutrition that they sorely need. Pet malnutrition is the gateway to many other diseases like organ failure. Cats may be picky with their food but this does not mean that you should overload them with the food that they do actually like.

So there you have it! We at Pet Centre of Sparta care quite deeply about the state of health of many loyal and loving pets all over the world. We would love to hear your thoughts on the matter of pet health issues. What else do you think are the most prevalent issues in terms of health?

Pet Nutrition 101: What Should You Look For In Your Pet’s Food Store?

When pets are in the picture, it is often important to be rather discerning as their owner. After all, your pets are completely reliant upon you to give them the care and nutrition that they need. When it comes to providing that very nutrition, one must always look at where you are getting the food or bully sticks.

Today, we wanted to discuss certain things that any caring pet owner should look for in their pet’s food store or food distributor. We feel this is something that needs to be discussed as more and more cases of food recalls are being made. If we want to keep our pets safe, we need to be proactive. With that being said, let’s take a look at a few things you should be looking at:

Licensing

Every business should have proper accreditation and licensing. If they are a pet food distributor for a specialized set of clientele like dogs, cats, and other such pets, they will need different licensing that allows them to sell food.

If the business that you are patronizing isn’t licensed, you can bet that the food that they are selling are either knock-offs or items that “fell off a truck”. This can mean that you will have no guarantees that the food that you are buying is actually from the brand that you like or that it is made of the ingredients that it says that it is made of.

Variety of Options

The best sort of pet food stores and distributors offer their consumers with a wide variety of options to choose from. When the pet food store sells only a couple, you can be that they tend to prioritize those based on other things like profit rather than service.

If the business that you are patronizing only offers a select number of options for your pet, you are severely limiting your choices. As a pet owner, it is best to make sure that you choose a distributor that can give you more options to pursue for your pet’s best health.

So there you have it! We at Pet Centre of Sparta care very much about the sort of options that our patrons are able to secure for their much beloved four legged family members. We would love to know your ideas about today’s topic. What are the particular things that pet owners need to look for in the pet food store or distributor that they patronize?
